How Nuclear Medicine Works as Diagnostic Imaging
In this post I would like to explain about Nuclear Medicine that related with diagnostic imaging. We have known that radionuclides is useful as diagnostic tools. It’s usualy part of Radiology Division in Hospital. Major Hospitals have many Experts for this field.
Radionuclides is discovered on radioactive decay of several substances if washed with appropriate diluent & kilovoltage and produce radionueclides complexes for special radiopharmaceutically.
This step can evaluate the body vizualizations clearly like spleen, thyroid, heart, bones, urinary tract, lung, brain and so on. Tumor and abscess are also the right targets for nuclear medicine.
Functions of Nuclear Medicine for Thyroid:
Radionuclides of thyroid imaging have major uses like:
- Depicting the glands and their contents when it’s enlarged to determine whether nodules contained therein toxic or non-toxic.
- Recording of the activity of the thyroid gland to respect the patient if being euthyroid, hyperthyroid or hypothyroid.
Functions of Nuclear Medicine for Brain:
Nowadays CT-Scan and MRI are the great diagnostic tools for brain assesments but using radionuclides imaging is the other choice method.
The functions of Nuclear Medicine is to see brain abscess, encephalitis, meningitis and specific lesion in posterior fossa.
This method has sensitivity of the brain tumor is about 85% and also useful for detecting metastatic process in the brain region.
Functions of Nuclear Medicine for Liver Spleen Imaging:
Investigating the diffuse parenchymal disease and to look for the possible space-occupying lesions within the liver or spleen. Radionuclides scanning of theses areas make rapid sequencing to demonstrate a certain functional aspects of the liver parenchyma and its secretion of bile from the liver into the biliary ductal system.
Functions of Nuclear Medicine for Bone Scanning:
Scanning of the bone can reveal some abnornality and metastases process. Another benefits of this method is to evaluate delay union of fracture, suspecting avascular necrosis and painful on the coxae area.
Functions of Nuclear Medicine for Renal:
Radionuclides in renal imaging can prove of:
- Renal blood flow evaluation.
- Detecting renal function.
- Assessing filtration fraction.
- Presence of vesicoureteral reflux.
Functions of Nuclear Medicine for Lung Scanning
1. To detect of perfusion defects by injection of a radionuclides into vascular system.
2. To see ventilatory defects by the use of radioactive gas.
Indications for lung diseases like suspect of emboli or infarction. It’s better to be compared with chest x-ray or other examinations to make sure the right diagnosis.
For many patients who using this method as diagnostic imaging is usualy avoided bacause it’s involving radioation of radionuclides after explained by the Doctors.
I totally agree with this opinion. We have still another good tools to evaluate many diseases and abnormality without radiation exposure usage. Ultrasound and MRI is another alternative solutions to replace Nuclear Medicine.
For your info that Nuclear Medicine is still used due to the more advantages compared with the negative impacts for some cases.
