I’m sure that most of you rarely hear about what BNO-IVP is. This examination is done if you have symptom of disease related with your urinary tract. BNO-IVP (Blass Nier Oversich - Intra Venous Pyelogram) is one of the x-ray test which provide you more detailed information about structure and function on both kidneys, ureters and urinary bladder.

What is the preparation of BNO-IVP?

1. You must get the prescription first from your requested Doctor to buy English Salt to clean-up your colon from gas and feces.

2. Your Blood Urea Nitrogen (Uremic) and Creatinine have to be tested in Laboratory to avoid an abnormality level. If they’re above the normal limits, it will influence the contrast media quality.

3. You must also fasting to ensure that all your abdominal areas are clean from any fecal and gas.

How is BNO-IVP Procedure?

1. Before examination is started, The X-ray Technician will make Plain Abdominal x-ray to see your preparation is enough or not.

2. If everything is clear (No over-gases and feces intra abdomen), your Nurse will check your vital sign like blood pressure, periphery pressure, and doing skin test. It takes time around 15 minutes to ensure that you have no allergy of the drugs (contrast Media).

3. Anesthesiologist will inject the contrast media via hand vein (wrist region). The dosage is around 40 ml.

4. X-ray Technician (Radiographer/Operator) will make multiple radiography to trace contrast media flow from kidneys up to urinary bladder. I usually make in time period of 7 Minutes, 15′, 25′ and 45′ and then to be continued with Post-void after patient’s bladder is full of contrast media. If the drug we injected make a delay because of urinary tract abnormality we will wait the time until 2 hours or more.

The contrast media passes through the cyrculatory system and arrives at the kidneys then via ureters up to urinary bladder.

What can we see from BNO-IVP?

Many diseases which we can see from BNO-IVP like renal mass/ tumor, urinary tract obstruction, cystitis, kidney stone, dilatation of ureters, calcification and so on.

The disadvantages of using BNO-IVP:

1. If the preparation of the patient is not good enough will obscure of renal anatomy because it’s superposition with bowel and gas.

2. If patient suffers chronic renal failure will result poor visualization of the images.

3. Many patients get allergy of contrast media which using iodine material inside.

If you suspected any disease from BNO-IVP test and you’re not sure about the result, you have right to do further tests like ultrasound, CT-Scan or MRI.
